From Old Portuguese navalla, inherited from Vulgar Latin *navac(u)la, from Latin novācula (“a sharp knife, dagger, razor”). Doublet of novácula. Cognate with Catalan navalla, Galician navalla, Mirandese nabalha and Spanish navaja.
