From Proto-Vietic *k-nɛːŋ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *gpnaiŋ, an infixed form of *gnaiŋ ~ *gniəŋ (“tusk, eye tooth”); cognates include Khmer ស្នែង (snaeng), Bahnar grĕng, Muong nenh and Mon ဂြၚ်.
