From Proto-Vietic *k-nɛːŋ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *gpnaiŋ, an infixed form of *gnaiŋ ~ *gniəŋ (tusk, eye tooth); cognates include Khmer ស្នែង (snaeng), Bahnar grĕng, Muong nenh and Mon ဂြၚ်.
