mătreață

Romanian

Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly tied to mătrice or to a Latin root *matricia, but semantic difficulties exist with this. A more likely origin is mătură ("broom") + -eață, based on what it cleans.

Noun

mătreață f (plural mătrețe)

  1. dandruff
  2. (regional) a type of loosestrife (Peplis portula)

Synonyms

  • (loosestrife): lintiță
