Possibly from Late Dacian *mellája, from Dacian *melwá-ja, from Proto-Indo-European *melh₂-wo-yo- (consisting of flour), from *melh₂-wo- (flour), from *melh₂- (to grind). Compare Albanian miell. Other theories include Latin amylum + the suffix -alium.
