From Proto-Slavic *mǭka (flour). Akin to regional Serbo-Croatian му́ка/múka (meal), Slovene móka, Russian мука́ (muká). Non-Slavic cognates include Ancient Greek μάσσω (mássō, to knead), German and Old High German mengen (to mix).
