From Proto-Germanic *mērijaz (famous). Cognate with Old English mǣre, Old Saxon māri, Old High German māri, the second part of Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌹𐌻𐌰𐌼𐌴𐍂𐌴𐌹𐍃 (wailamereis, laudable)[1].
