From Old Norse mánuðr, variant of mánaðr, from Proto-Germanic *mēnōþs (month), from a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *mḗh₁n̥s (moon, month). See also máni. Cognate with Faroese mánaður, Danish and Norwegian Bokmål måned and Swedish and Norwegian Nynorsk månad, English month, Old English mōnaþ, German Monat, Dutch maand.
