movilă

Romanian

Alternative forms

  • moghilă

Etymology

Uncertain. Probably of Slavic origin, compare Proto-Slavic *mogyla (sepulchral cairn), or an expressive creation based on a root moc-. The word found in Slavic languages seems itself to be of foreign origin. It has been attempted to link it to a Gepid word, but this is unlikely. Compare also Albanian gamulë, and Romanian măgură.

Noun

movilă f (plural movile)

  1. mound, knoll, hillock, pile
