From Old Galician and Old Portuguese montanna (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Vulgar Latin *montānia, montānea, feminine of *montānius, montāneus (mountainous), alteration of Latin montānus, from mōns (mountain), from Proto-Indo-European *men-. Cognate with Portuguese montanha and Spanish montaña.
