moină

Romanian

Etymology

Related to or derived from moale (plural moi), or from muia, with the suffix -ină. Other attempts have been made to link it to a derivative of a Vulgar Latin *mollināre (cf. the verb moina), or from *mollimen, or *mollio, mollionis, or to a lost early Romanian *moiu, from a Latin root *mollius. One theory suggests a parallel with doină. A derivation from Slavic močiti is improbable.[1]

Noun

moină f (plural moine)

  1. thaw (warmer, humid weather following the cold of winter; warmth of weather sufficient to melt that which is frozen)
  2. fallow (arable lend left uncultivated and unseeded for a year)
