Possibly a compound formation from mbi + thej 'to turn, twist', a variant of thyej . Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *mer 'to plait, bind; rope'. Compare Old High German bardi (shield), Italian barda (horse harness), Greek βροχός (vrochós, cord).
