Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *madź(i)ā, from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂ǵ- (to knead, stroke). Cognate to Ancient Greek μαγίς (magís, kneaded mass/substance), Russian мазь (maz, salve, ointment). Demiraj suggests a formation from mâj (to fatten) (standard majm).[1]
