From Proto-Germanic *maimrōną (to worry, be mindful), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)mer- (to resort to thinking, remember, take care). Akin to Old English mamor "lethargy, sleep", Old English mimor "mindful", Old English mimorian "to remember". See mimor.
