From Anglo-Norman maumeterie, a reduced form of mahumetterie (“idolatry, heathendom”), from Mahumet (“Muhammad”), from Old French Mahomet, ultimately from Arabic مُحَمَّد (muḥammad) (see Muhammad for more). Equivalent to mammet + -ry.
