From Basque mart- (blackberry; bramble), as in martotx (bramble), martsuts ~ martuza (blackberry). Basque also gave Aragonese martuel, Spanish madroño. Similar sense development in Galician amorodo, Portuguese morango (strawberry), both from amora (blackberry; bramble).
