lôbrego

From Old Portuguese lobrego, probably from Latin lūbricus (“slippery, slimy; also deceitful, hazardous, unsteady”), and therefore a doublet of lúbrico, borrowed from the same source. Perhaps influenced by lūgubris (“gloomy, mournful”). Another theory derives it from lūgubris, with metathesis[1] (in which case the doublet would be lúgubre). Compare Spanish lóbrego.
