Formed as a singular from Old Catalan llémenes, feminine of a masculine plural llémens[1], from a Vulgar Latin *lēndinem, accusative of *lēndō or *lēndis, as a variant of Latin lēns, lēndem (perhaps altered under the influence of Latin cimex, cimicem). Compare Portuguese lêndea, Italian lendine, Romanian lindină.

2. (textiles, usually in the plural) A small defect in a piece of cloth with the appearance of a nit.
3. A hedgehog mushroom (Hydnum repandum), so named from having bodies with the appearance of a nit instead of gills on the underside of the fruiting body to disperse the spores.
