English from the 17th century, from Medieval Latin or New Latin lexicon, from Ancient Greek λεξικόν (lexikón, a lexicon), neuter of λεξικός (lexikós, of words), from λέξις (léxis, a saying, speech, word), from λέγειν (légein, to speak).
