Etymology
An original adjective formation after *lesh, *lesht + *-rik < *-nik (cf. besnik), reflecting Proto-Indo-European *laḱso- (“salmon, trout”). Close to Lithuanian lašišà (“salmon”), Latvian lasis, and Middle Low German las (“salmon”), Russian лосо́сь (losósʹ, “salmon”). The sense development reflects the particular fish color.
