From Old English lendenu pl (“loins”) (in compound lenden-, lende-), from Proto-Germanic *landį̄, *landijō (“loin”), from Proto-Indo-European *lendʰ- (“kidney, waist, loin”). Cognate with Dutch lendenen pl (“loins”), German Lende (“haunch, loin”), Swedish länd (“haunch, loin”), Icelandic lend (“loin”). More at loin.
