Etymology

Possibly of Germanic origin; cf. Frankish *lekkon, from Proto-Germanic *likkōną, whence Old English liccian (Modern English lick). Compare French lécher. Alternatively, perhaps from a Vulgar Latin root *ligicāre, from Latin lingere, lingō.
