From Middle French laische, from Old French lesche (“sedge”), from Frankish *lisca, *liska (“sedge”), from Proto-Germanic *liskō (“sedge”). Cognate with Old High German lisca, liska ( > Modern German Liesch (“sedge”)), Old Saxon lesc (“rush, reed”), Middle Dutch lies, liesc (“sedge”).
