The word has also been loaned to the other Baltic-Finnic languages, e.g. Estonian laud (table), as well as the Samic languages, e.g. Skolt Sami lu´vdd (plank; float for seine)

Noun

lauta

  1. A board (long, wide and thin piece of sawn timber).
  2. An element in many compound words, where the English equivalent is "board" (The Finnish equivalent for "board" may also be taulu or levy). These compounds can be shortened to plain lauta, if there is no danger of confusion.

    silityslauta (ironing board)
    lainelauta (surfboard)
    lumilauta (snowboard)
