From Old French larmoiier, equivalent to larme (tear) + -oyer (verbal suffix). Compare Romance cognates with a similar infix from Latin *-idio, *-idiare: Occitan lagremejar, Catalan llagrimejar, dialectal Italian lacrimeggiare, Spanish lagrimear, Portuguese lacrimejar, Romanian lăcrima, lăcrimează.
