Etymology

From Medieval Latin lampreda, of uncertain origin: possibly from Late Latin lampetra, from a combination of lambere ("lick") + petra ("stone"). Compare Spanish lamprea, French lamproie and Portuguese lampreia. However see also Gaulish naupreda[1]
