From Proto-Albanian *karpudā, from Proto-Indo-European *kerp, *(s)kerp. Cognate to Greek καρπός (karpós, “fruit”), κείρω (keírō, “to cut off”), Latin carpere 'to seize', German Herbst. Alternatively, compare Lithuanian kèpuré (“cap”) and Latvian cępure (“id”).
