From Proto-Albanian *karpudā, from Proto-Indo-European *kerp, *(s)kerp. Cognate to Greek καρπός (karpós, fruit), κείρω (keírō, to cut off), Latin carpere 'to seize', German Herbst. Alternatively, compare Lithuanian kèpuré (cap) and Latvian cępure (id).
