From Proto-Vietic *keːw (to call), a non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (“to call; to cry; to shout”; SV: khiếu) or from Proto-Mon-Khmer *[c]kuul, *[c]kuəl, *[c]kəl, *[c]kiil, *[c]kiəl (to call, to bark). Akin to Proto-Pearic *keːv.
