Etymology

Borrowed from Old East Slavic скърбь (skŭrbĭ), from Proto-Slavic *skъrbъ, cf. Russian скорбь (skorbʹ), Serbo-Croatian skrb. Cognate to Votic kurpa. Possibly a Baltic loan, compare Lithuanian skurbė (grief).
