From Proto-Slavic *kupiti, from early Proto-Slavic *kōpītej, from unattested Gothic *kaupjan, from Proto-Germanic *kaupijaną, related to Gothic 𐌺𐌰𐌿𐍀𐍉𐌽 (kaupōn, to barter), itself a borrowing from Latin caupō (tradesman). Compare German kaufen and Norwegian kjøpe.
