Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *gem- 'to grab, grip; be full'. Close to Old English cumbol (“wound, swelling, lump, growth”), Lithuanian gùmulas (“clump, ball, tangle, knot”), Old Norse kumla (“squeeze”), Middle Irish gemel (“shackles, gyve, manacles, handcuff”). Similar formation to kungull and brumbull. Alternatively from Ancient Greek κοκκύμελον (kokkúmelon, “red apple”).[1]
