Etymology

From kimpa- + -le. The origin of the root is unknown, but possibly akin to either kimmota (to spring off)[1] or kimppu (bundle)[2].

  1. A slab of a relatively soft material such as butter or cake.
  2. hunk (relatively large piece of something)
    Note: Pieces of plants or rock would normally not be called kimpale in Finnish.
