From French khédive, from Ottoman Turkish خدیو‎ (ḫediv, ḫıdiv), from Persian خدیو‎ (xadēw, xidēw, “lord, master, king”),[1] from Bactrian χοαδηο (xoadēo, “lord”), calque of Ancient Greek αὐτοκράτωρ (autokrátōr).
