From Middle High German kūwen, variant of kiuwen, from Old High German kiuwan, from Proto-Germanic *kewwaną, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵyewh₁-. Compare Dutch kauwen, Low German käwwen, West Frisian kôgje, English chew. The expected form käuen still in the compound wiederkäuen (to chew the cud).
