From Proto-Slavic *junъ (“young”) (from Proto-Indo-European *h₂yuh₁en-) + *-akъ (masculine nominalizing suffix cognate to Slovak "-ák"). Cognate with Old Church Slavonic юнакъ (junakŭ), Czech jonák (Moravian Czech junák), Polish junak, Bulgarian юна́к (junák).
