From the same stem found in josta (“belt”), Proto-Indo-European *yo(u)s- (“to girdle”) (itself from *yeu- (“to bind”)), but with a different suffix (-l(a) instead of -t(a)). Cognates include Lithuanian júoslas (“tie, bind, bandage”), and, with yet another suffix, Ancient Greek ζώνη (zṓnē, “belt, sash, zone”) (from *zṓsnā from *yo(w)s-nā-).[1]
