From Middle Norwegian høg (“tall”), influenced by East Nordic language. Cognate with Old Norse hæð or derived from it; ultimately from Proto-Germanic *hauhiþō. Compare Swedish höjd, Dutch hoogte, Old High German hohida, Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌿𐌷𐌹𐌸𐌰 (hauhiþa), English height.
