From a Middle High German noun hucker (peddler, merchant), whence in early modern German the verb hockern (with variants). The contemporary form is Low German (compare Middle Low German höker). Pertaining to Hucke (load, burden). Compare also English huckster (borrowed from Dutch) and English hawk.
