Etymology

From Greek χαρτί (chartí), possibly partly through a South Slavic intermediate chartija (compare Bulgarian харти́я (hartíja), Macedonian хартија (hartija)). Compare Daco-Romanian hârtie. Cf. also carti, which as the same Ancient Greek root but passed through Latin.
