hlbwc

Middle Persian

Etymology

From hl (xar, donkey, ass) + bwc (buz, goat). Akin to Manichaean Middle Persian xrbwz (xarbuz). Compare Iranian borrowings Old Armenian խարբուզ (xarbuz) and Georgian ხარაბუზი (xarabuzi), and also Classical Syriac ܥܙܝ ܚܡܪ (ʿezzay ḥemār), which is a calque of the Middle Persian word.

For the formation compare Old Armenian էշայծեամն (ēšayceamn, literally donkey-gazelle).
