From hl (xar, “donkey, ass”) +‎ bwc (buz, “goat”). Akin to Manichaean Middle Persian xrbwz (xarbuz). Compare Iranian borrowings Old Armenian խարբուզ (xarbuz) and Georgian ხარაბუზი (xarabuzi), and also Classical Syriac ܥܙܝ ܚܡܪ‎ (ʿezzay ḥemār), which is a calque of the Middle Persian word.
