Usage notes

This Greek loanword is used chiefly in Bosnian, Montenegrin and Serbian (as well as in Macedonian and Bulgarian).

Like all other Slavic languages, modern standard Croatian prefers the native Slavic term tìsuća, and hiljada is only used as stylistically marked in the language of literature or sometimes in informal speech.

In contrast, the term tìsuća was used in medieval Serbian (For quotations of use of this term, see Citations:тисућа.) but later replaced with the Greek loan word.
