Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish خاتون (hātun), from Persian خاتون (xātūn), itself perhaps from Common Turkic *xātun (queen). Long vowel, preservation of h-, lack of voicing and labial harmony suggest it is a borrowing rather than inheritance.

Doublet of kadın.
