From earlier *(s)kaklo, either from Proto-Indo-European *kagʰlos (pebble), or from a Proto-Indo-European *ḱoḱló-, a reduplication of Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (to cover). Cognate with Lithuanian šešėlis (shade, shadow), Ancient Greek κάχληξ (kákhlēx, pebble), Sanskrit शिशिर (śíśira, cool, cold) and Old English hæġl, hæġel (hail).
