From Arabic عَرُوس (ʿarūs, usually “bride”, but also “bridegroom”). Possibly in part a backformation from the marked feminine għarusa, from Arabic عَرُوسة (ʿarūsa, bride). The commoner Arabic word for “bridegroom” is عَرِيس (ʿarīs).
