Possibly from Old French gaschier, gacher, gasser (to soil, spoil, waste) and gaschier, guaschier, waschier (to wash, soak), both from Old Frankish *waskan, *wascōn (to wash, bathe), from Proto-Germanic *waskaną (to wash), related to French gâcher (to waste, mess up); from Proto-Indo-European *wod- (wet). See gâcher, wash. Alternatively, from guazzo, guazza.
