From Old Occitan [Term?] (compare Occitan catla, calha), from Vulgar Latin *quaqla or *coacla, from contraction of a Late Latin quaquila or coacula, itself either of imitative, onomatopoetic origin or alternatively from a Germanic source (cf. Frankish *hwahtila)[1]. Compare also French caille, Italian quaglia.
