grummeln

German

Etymology

From Low and Central German dialects, from Middle Low German grummelen and northern Middle High German *grummeln, iterative of grummen. A relation with Gram and grimmig is theoretically possible, but the words certainly have a strong onomatopoeic element. Cognate with Dutch grommelen, English grumble.

Verb

grummeln (third-person singular simple present grummelt, past tense grummelte, past participle gegrummelt, auxiliary haben)
