Etymology
Attested in Galician-Portuguese, in the 13th century, as guerlanda (Cantigas de Santa Maria) and guirlanda (in the Cantigas of the Galician author Airas Nunes). Probably from Old Occitan guirlanda (compare French guirlande).[1]
Cognate with Portuguese guirlanda, Spanish guirnalda.
