Etymology

From *granth, diminutive in -th from South Slavic; cf. Serbo-Croatian grana ‘branch; brushwood’, Macedonian гранка (granka), dialectal Bulgarian гран (gran).[1] Alternatively, with voicing of initial, from krath ‘leaf bud, sprout on a tree’, variant of kranth ~ krëndth, diminutive of krand ~ krënd ‘brushwood; tinder’.[2]
