From Latin glāns, glāndem, probably through the now archaic, dialectal form ghinde or through an intermediate Vulgar Latin root *glanda with change in declension. Compare Aromanian gljindã, Italian ghianda. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʷelh₂- (acorn).
