Usage notes

In spoken language sometimes confused with the participle gewöhnt, from gewöhnen (to accustom oneself to):

Ein solch hartes Leben war ich vorher nicht gewohnt gewesen.
I wasn't used to such a hard life.
•Nur langsam hatte ich mich an das harte Leben gewöhnt.
Only slowly I got used to / adapted to the hard life.

Gewöhnen describes the process of accustoming oneself to something, gewohnt sein emphasizes the fact that one is already familiar with something, or doing something regularly, without necessarily appreciating it.[1]
